Mix
Notes Roughs 8/2003
General:
- While these
where done quickly quite a few of them came out good. The ones I think
are in the ballpark are ‘Beautiful Shadow', ‘Hiding', ‘Empty', ‘ Palo
Alto ' and ‘Close the Door'
- The ones that
feel further off are ‘Your Old Guitar' and ‘In the City'
- The vocal
levels and effects are good except for ‘In the City'
- Also most
of them have too much bass
- The drums
are also low on quite a few of them.
- There are
of course pops and noises, etc. but I actually like some of the tape
rewinds noises – maybe we can use this somewhere
1.
Beautiful Shadow (Good Mix)
- Reverb sounds
great
- Too much bass
- The main chorus
lines “Everything has changed…” feel like they might be a little low
- Drums also
feel a little too far back in the Chorus section – they sound great
in the verses
- Thinking putting
the violin off to one side might be cool
- Guitar solo
could possibly come up at little in the falsetto otro out of the last
chorus
- Offset vocal
to one side after guitar solo and before the last verse
2.
Hiding (Good Mix)
- Acoustic guitar
could come up a little in the chorus sections
- Drums seem
to be a little low in the mix
- Keys are a
little loud at the top of the verse – seem ok after that
3.
Your Old Guitar
- Guitar needs
to be more out front with the vocal
- Pad needs
to be lower in the mix
- Keys a bit
loud in some of the fills
- Vocal in bridge
could come up a little
- Drums are
too far back
- The ending
was abrupt
- Mike's mix
might be a good reference point for this one
4.
Almost Real
- I like the
garage/indie rock feel of it
- The lead guitar
sounds good – it accents a lot of the vocals nicely
- I like how
it is mixed all the way to the hand sliding off the guitar – sounds
cool
- Vocal could
probably come up a little
- Rhythm guitars
need to be beefed up
5.
In the City
- Vocal is low
– especially in chorus
- Vocal sounds
thin and compressed sounding – no dynamics
- May need to
adjust some of the vocal effects in the chorus sections now having
the slap effects as well
- Otro section
is missing
- Alt
Mix : I'm thinking of having a non-slap clean version of
this one that will sound more jazzy as a B-side – similarly to Mike's
mix of it.
6.
Empty (Good Mix)
- Piano needs
to come up (except for maybe in the fills where it is already pretty
loud) Not sure about Mike's vocal in the last chorus – maybe off to
one side? (this could also be an alt mix candidate)
7.
Palo Alto (Good Mix)
- Vocals might
come up a little in the chorus – there on the edge of being lost in
the mix
- Make backing
vocals in the verses more distant
- Bring keyboard
up sooner after the mandolin dissolves during the otro
8.
Silver
I love how the vocal, bass and guitar are positioned in the verses
Noise track needs to go down
The ‘silver' vocal chorus lines need to go up
Some of the levels of the music in the chorus don't feel right – not
sure exactly what needs to change though
9.
Stars (pretty close)
- I love how
the cello goes out at the end
- Tamborine
needs to come up in the mix – it accents the song nicely
- Reverb might
be a little too much at the beginning
- Vocal could
go up a little during the bridge
- Make sure
the piano stays out front – it's the hook (my Coldplay ripoff)
- Mike had a
good pre-cello mix of this one
10.
Close the Door (Good Mix)
- Missing count
at the beginning
- Backing vocals
on chorus lines might work if they are offset to one side and a little
further back in the mix?
- Bring keyboard
sounds up more in the break/solo section – there's some nice ear candy
in there
- Fade all the
guitars before the end – I just want to hear the single drum beat
at the end
11.
Instrumental Thing (Good Mix)
- This sounds
good
- Might need
to do something about how the noise fades at the end (could also be
a mastering thing)
